Halloween Tradition #10 - Annual Themed Dinner Party
The Friday or Saturday before Halloween we host our annual Halloween dinner party. We usually have a sit down dinner followed by movies, music, contests and dancing. This is always a theme based party where costumes are definitely required. You need to do some prep work on this one well in advance like deciding on your theme, making and sending RSVP invites, making a dinner plan, a music and movie plan, where, if you have dancing, will that space be. It takes some work but it's something that not only us but our friends have come to look forward to every year. For lots of great Halloween party tips, suggestions and ideas visit the Halloween Costume Party web site.

In the past we've held a number of different type of Halloween parties including:

The Vampires Ball
When Vampires are the theme we go with coffins and lots of hanging bats as decorations. The selected music tends to be dark and gothic. The food usually finger food and dripping with red sauce or something of that nature. Drinks are red. The lighting is subdued, we make window treatments and decor for the whole party area look old, dusty, Gothic and dark.

The Halloween Ball
A free-for-all party where any Halloween costume is acceptable. Have a contest for best male, female and couple costumes and give prizes. Have a buffet meal so people can mingle while Halloween themed music plays and maybe a horror movie on TV with the sound off.

The Zombie Rave
Everyone dresses as a zombie at this disco style party. There's nothing funnier than a bunch of zombies dancing the night away under a mirror ball to Donna Summers! You want chunky foods that they can "devour", use body parts molds to make some of the treats in. Use low, green lighting.

Haunted Halloween
Ghosts are the way to go. We make a tombstone for every guest that we invite with their name on it. Everyone has to come dressed in a ghost costume of some type. There are some really amazing costumes out there now! Try Costume Kingdom for some great ghost costumes. We play dark, Gothy music while eating and then livelier stuff during the night. The food is stuff like hot dogs wrapped with biscuit dough to look like a ghost. Everything is light, airy and ghostly for this one.

Dead Like Me Party
Remember that old show, Dead Like Me? Some people are chosen when they die to become Grim Reapers and help the departed on to their reward. The intro to the show has all of them dressed in a Grim Reaper robe. We love the show and made a theme party to with it. Everyone dressed as a Grim Reaper. The theme is death with tombstones, ravens, a whole graveyard look to the whole thing.

These are just a few of the themes that we've used. There's also Davey Jones Locker (Dead Pirates), Evil Clown Circus, Werewolf Ball, Mad Doctors and Nurses, Witches Coven and Supernatural (Sam, Dean and creatures from their dad's book of monsters). The ideas are endless and you'll have a great time! By having this before Halloween, it gives the adults a chance to have a party before having to worry about taking the kids out for a night of Trick-or-Treating on Halloween.
